INT 1075 Strýtur Chimney Dive - Diving Day Tour From Akureyri
Strýtan diving day tour from Akureyri to the famous geothermal chimneys in North Iceland.
The Strýtur are giant submarine geothermal silica cones that rise from the 70 meters deep seafloor in Eyjafjörður. They are totally unique diving wonder, and one that has recently been discovered and the only one we know of in the world. It was in the year of 1997 that Erlendur Bogason and his friend Árni Halldósson captain on the whale watching boat Níels Jónsson found the 55 meter high cone they named Strýtan.
The top of the cone is 15 meter under the surface and we estimate that around 100 liters of 75°C hot water per second flows out of the cone and into the ocean.
Strýtan started forming towards the end of last ice age, about 10.000 years ago. The cones are made from magnesium-silicate from the sea. Cones like these are usually found at 2000-6000 meters or deeper.
Bad eyesight? Since you are wearing dive goggles to see underwater there can be nothing in the way of the seal to keep them from filling up with water. That is, you can not wear glasses underneath the goggles. Alternatively, wear eye lenses or bring your own goggles with prescription.
NOTE: All dives are performed in a dry suit. Divers have to supply sizes on suit before hand. We need you to send us your height, weight and shoe size in order to provide you with the best fitting dry suit. Please take into account that you may get a little wet. Additionally, from 1st of May to the 1st of August we offer this as a night dive in the midnight sun, starting from Akureyri at 20:30. No extra charge.??
Requirement: PADI Advanced® or compatible and dry suit certificate required to dive the original Strýta (the deeper of the Strýtur). PADI Advanced® or compatible required to dive the Arnarnesstrýtur (the shallower of the Strýtur).
